About

In the early years of my art education, I found my passion for art by looking at the works of African American artists, especially those from the Harlem Renaissance. Growing up in DC, public art surrounded me, especially murals by artists of color. My elementary school art teacher, a black muralist, greatly emphasized community and showed the beauty of colored people, enlivening academic spaces and inspiring hope. He moved me to focus my art on community and social issues. However, most of my artistic education greatly emphasized Western Academic art. I attended Catholic school for seven years, and beautiful Catholic art steeped in tradition surrounded me. I found much of my style in exploring my identity as a black person in Western classical art. With each medium, whether in a cartoon or with the dynamism and graphics of an illustration, I desire to reveal the truth and critique the social issues of race, gun violence, and climate change with an air of beauty.
