This was the final project for my Critical Spatial Practice architecture class. In the assignment, we were asked to design a sustainable community center for Spruces Park, 10 minutes away from Williams College.
The Spruces was created as a retirement community in 1954. Unfortunately, the Hoosic River next to it flooded as a result of Hurricane Irene and destroyed all the homes in 2011. Now it remains as an empty grass field.
In my building plan I seek to create a multipurpose community center with natural heating, lighting and air condition utilizing: vertical and horizontal louevers, a solarium, wind direction, and building orientation . The community center features a kitchen, a multipurpose room on the ground floor with sliding walls, a meeting room, bathrooms, a basketball court, and a dance room that all meet building room size regulations.
