Fallen from Grace

As the final project for Drawing I, inspired by the work of Kara Walker, I played with positive and negative space to create a short story about an enslaved black family. It discusses white oppression and how that oppression leads to systemic issues within the household. Living in a low-income community, I have witnessed the devastating effects of substance abuse and how these communities often suffer from a host of systemic issues, and liquor stores profit from their misery. The targeting of these impoverished communities is another form of enslavement as they become reliant on the substances and destroy their households from within. Those struggles can create generational trauma. It is tough to break the cycle.
